Communication Support

Communication Partner

  • Participation in:

    • At least one informational conference*

    • At least two hands-on trainings*

    • Ongoing in-service trainings

  • Supervision once per week from Mentor and/or Trainer, in person and/or online

  • Successful, ongoing support of at least one Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) user

    • Ensuring eye scanning of keyboard and/or letterboard

    • Providing the least support necessary

    • Fading support as fitting

    • Independent, reliable use of yes/no and multiple-choice questions

    • Working toward message passing

    • Encouraging typing and/or letterboard use with additional partners

Communication Mentor

All of the Communication Partner requirements, plus:

  • Participation in at least one informational conference* per year

  • Participation in at least one hands-on training* per year

  • Successful support of at least two AAC users (see above)

  • Supervision of at least one Communication Partner

Communication Trainer

 

All of the Communication Mentor requirements, plus:

  • Presentation at one or more conference* or training* per year

  • Successful support of more than two AAC users (see above)

  • Supervision of at least one Mentor

 

*Conferences and trainings are vetted by our Communication Support leadership team

What is Communication Support?

We are proud to provide communication support to people who have little or no reliable speech. Our team members are trained in best practices as outlined by Syracuse University's Inclusion and Communication Initiatives, and adhere to the Communication Bill of Rights as developed by the National Joint Committee for the Communication Needs of Persons with Severe Disabilities.​

 

IGNITE's Communication Support team is led by Liz Luviano.​

Where is Communication Support available?

Communication Support is currently available from Partners, Mentors, and Trainers in Los Angeles County, Ventura County, Sacramento, and the Eastern Sierra region of California. This service may be combined with Tailored Services and/or Independent Living Skills supports, and is compatible with Kindling Studios.
